Summary of Learning
Over the last few weeks, you have learned about plastic pollution and how difficult it is to clean up our oceans.
In the process of learning about this topic, you have developed your understanding of specific geography skills and concepts. For example, you have studied locations and places by…
- Using different types of fieldwork sampling (random and systematic) to observe, measure and record the human and physical features in the local area. Record the results in a range of ways.
How did I do that? By counting micro-plastics on a beach.
- Naming and locating some of the countries and cities of the world and their identifying human and physical characteristics, including hills, mountains, rivers, key topographical features and land-use patterns; and understand how some of these aspects have changed over time.
How did I do that? By locating oceans and seas, then locating countries where plastic ducks washed up on beaches.
You have also learned about patterns that occur physically or in human activities:
- Describe how locations around the world are changing and explain some of the reasons for change.
- Describe how countries and geographical regions are interconnected and interdependent.
How? By learning how our rubbish goes into the oceans and then can end up across the other side of the world on beaches or the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
You have also learned to communicate geographically about…
- natural resources – especially our water supplies.
- human geography, including: economic activity including trade links, and the distribution of natural resources including energy, food, minerals, and water supplies.
How? By studying ocean cargo ships and how they transport items around the world, sometimes leading to the contents of containers falling into the sea.
After these lessons, we can draw the conclusion that what we do affects our world. However, does the world also affect us if we don’t take care of it? How? Discuss with an adult.
Your task this week will be one of the following:
Create a leaflet which explains some of the issues of plastic pollution and advices readers of what to do about it to ensure we protect the world and our health.
OR
Prepare and record a 3 minute assembly presentation on an aspect of what you have learned and with a key message about what we can do to ensure that our health and our oceans do not continue to be damaged by human activity.
Each assembly presentation can be watched by different bubble groups throughout the school. The focus should be working towards Milestone 3 POP Tasks.
OR
Create a power-point presentation on an aspect of what you have learned and with a key message about what we can do to ensure that our health and our oceans do not continue to be damaged by human activity.
