What Is Wildlife Trade?

Wildlife trade is when wild animals are killed and parts of their body are sold. Sometimes they are sold alive for zoos, tourist attractions, or even as exotic pets!

How Does Wildlife Trade Work?

The wildlife trade chain works like this:

First, the poachers kill or capture the animals; for example elephants are often killed for their ivory tusks. Then the poachers sell it to smugglers which smuggle it to other countries where they sell it again to other smugglers. In fact, there are many people in the wildlife trade chain who will buy and sell before it reaches the consumers (the buyers).

Why Should We Protect Animals?

If we don’t protect animals, some species will go extinct. The animals look after the ecosystem and if they go extinct their prey’s population would rise too quickly.
